AMIGRANO is a project by CGS Sementi that involves the collaboration of partners Open Fields Srl, Value Groovers Srl and University of Tuscia, Department of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences (DAFNE).
The project aims to develop new advanced lines of durum wheat with high amylose content, with which to launch the first specialized European supply chain for products with high nutritional value. Resistant starch, a key component of these varieties, is less digestible and promotes health benefits, including better glycemic control and a positive impact on the intestinal microbiota. In pasta, moreover, the high content of resistant starch improves texture and cooking stability.
The project activities are divided into three specific actions: i) crosses and genetic selection; ii) molecular and biochemical analyses; and iii) evaluation of semolina quality through transformation tests. These are complemented by cross-cutting actions such as: iv) the exercise of Cooperation among partners; v) dissemination; and vi) market studies and business model.
The approach integrates conventional breeding techniques and use of molecular markers, with biochemical analyses for validation of the "resistant starch" trait. These molecular approaches, together with the support of growth chambers, allow to accelerate the genetic improvement phases and reduce varietal release times.
